AARON CARTER CREDITS GIRLFRIEND FOR SAVING HIS LIFE

LATEST: Pop teen AARON CARTER credits the quick thinking of his model girlfriend MONIQUE DECORMIER for saving his life, following his near-fatal car accident.

The I WANT CANDY singer watched in horror late Wednesday night (05JAN05) as a mattress flew off the roof of a truck he was driving behind on the Florida Turnpike and wedged itself under his CADILLAC ESCALADE.

The mattress burst into flames, setting fire to Carter's vehicle.

He says, "I pulled over, I got out and I looked under my car and I was like, 'Oh no, it's on fire.' I had a couple bottles (of water) in my car and I went under (the vehicle) and I started trying to put 'em out. My girlfriend came and she pulled me away."

Within seconds, the vehicle went up in flames.

He adds, "The crazy thing was is when she pulled me away, it lit from underneath, all around the side of the car.

"The way I could've reacted and the way I did probably saved my life."

Carter, who was driving to Orlando for a photoshoot at the time of the accident, reveals it's not his first near-death experience - he almost drowned in the family swimming pool as a child.

Aaron Carter Loses Car to Fiery Accident

Thu Jan 6, 8:30 PM ET Entertainment - AP Music

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - Teen pop singer Aaron Carter (news) hit a mattress early Thursday on Florida's Turnpike with his SUV, which then lit on fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. No one was seriously injured.

Carter, 17, was driving his 2004 Cadillac Escalade north to Orlando at about 12:30 a.m. when a mattress came loose from the cargo bed of a delivery truck in front of him, said his spokesman, Brad Zeifma.

Carter drove over the mattress, which got stuck under the sport utility vehicle and caught fire, probably from the heat of the exhaust system.

The singer pulled over and escaped the vehicle, then watched it explode in flames, Zeifma said. A friend traveling with him also escaped.

Carter and his friend were treated at the scene.

"Everything happened in such a whirlwind," Carter said. "It was like the mattress flew out of nowhere. You think you're invincible when you're behind the steering wheel of an SUV but you're not. I'm OK but you can imagine I'm still in shock."

Carter, the younger brother of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter (news), arrived in Orlando for the shooting of the cover of his next, "Saturday Night," due out in March, Zeifma said.

State troopers said the delivery truck never stopped.
