Alicia Leigh Willis Confirms She's Leaving GH
Posted Friday, November 04, 2005 5:34:32 PM

Fans hoping that the long-running rumors claiming Alicia Leigh Willis (Courtney Matthews) would be leaving General Hospital are in for some very bad news. The actress has now confirmed that she has, in fact, decided not to renew her contract with the ABC soap. She will exit the show later this year and focus her attention on the upcoming pilot season, the time when networks are pitched new show ideas for the fall season.

Rumors of Willis' exit first surfaced earlier this year around the same time that Tamara Braun (ex-Carly Corinthos) announced that she would be leaving General Hospital. Close friends with Braun, Willis was rumors to be following her friend into the General Hospital sunset and into a search for projects outside of daytime television. Willis immediately dismissed talk that Braun had somehow talked her into leaving the show. Still, rumors floated around for months afterward stating that the actress had already made up her mind to leave.

Some General Hospital fans are scratching their heads and wondering why the role of Lucas Jones was suddenly recast in late September. After all, until recently the Lucas had been primarily a background character.

"Ryan Carnes has decided to move on," a General Hospital spokesperson said in a statement last month. "[T]he cast and crew wish him well in all of his future professional endeavors."

With Carnes' success in a recurring role on the primetime soap, "Desperate Housewives," it surprised many that the young star wouldn't relish some extensive on-screen time on General Hospital. Internet rumors, however, assert that Carnes had an issue with the direction that the writers had planned for Lucas: Lucas will be coming out as gay later this year. The rumors claim that Carnes is fearful of being typecast in gay roles. His "Desperate Housewives'" character was seen smooching another boy last season and he starred opposite the openly gay American Idol finalist Jim Verraros in the independent film Eating Out............

Laura Wright Cast as GH's New Carly
Posted Monday, September 12, 2005 10:34:24 PM
Updated Sunday, September 18, 2005 11:57:10 PM

Though an official announcement from ABC was still pending at the time, [sign in to see URL] broke the news last week that Laura Wright (Cassie Winslow, Guiding Light) will join the cast of General Hospital later this year in the role of Carly Corinthos. The network has since confirmed that Wright will join the GH cast.

Wright's name had been bandied about as a possible replacement for the outgoing Jennifer Bransford for several days. Speculation really heated up when Wright announced that she would be exiting Guiding Light after seven years. Bransford was let go last week after five months with General Hospital.

“Carly is a complex character, and we are excited to bring Laura’s talent, beauty and intelligence to this role,” said ABC Daytime president Brian Frons in a statement. “Fans can look forward to high drama between Sonny, Carly and Alcazar this fall.”

In a statement on her official web site, Wright admitted to exuberantly accepting ABC's offer to take over the role of Carly. However, the actress admits that in order to move on, it meant having to make the difficult decision to leave behind a Guiding Light character that she had played for the better part of a decade.

"As sad as I am to leave a wonderful place that I called home for a long time, it is time for me to go," Wright said. "This was not an easy decision. But my husband and I talked about it and we said, 'What the Hell! Let's live on the West Coast for a few years!'" .........

Done Deal: Bransford Out as GH's Carly
Posted Saturday, September 10, 2005 7:17:42 PM
Updated Monday, September 19, 2005 12:00:25 AM
After only five months in the pivotal role of General Hospital's Carly Corinthos, actress Jennifer Bransford has been let go. As first reported last week by [sign in to see URL], rumors of the actress' status with the show have been circulating for some time.

Bransford joined the cast of General Hospital in April, taking ove the role of Carly from the wildly popular Tamara Braun. Some fans of Braun were extremely critical of Bransford and expressed their often times cruel views of Bransford and her work as often as possible. Going into the role, Bransford, however, knew that winning over fans would be a challenge.

In somewhat of an ironic twist, fans seem to have been warming up to Bransford in recent weeks.

As of our original "post time," ABC had yet to issue a formal statement regarding Bransford's dismissal. Since that time a spokesperson has weighed in with an explanation on the recast. .............
